Tournament Format: How Does the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 Work?
The 2025 edition follows a new structure endorsed by the FIFA Council, modeled after the old World Cup format (pre-2022).
- 32 teams from six confederations plus the host nation’s champion.
- Teams are selected based on performances from 2021 to 2024 and updated rankings.
- The teams are divided into 8 groups of 4.
- Top two from each group advance to the Round of 16.
- From the Round of 16 onwards, the competition adopts a single-elimination format.
- No third-place playoff is held.
Knockout Stage Rules:
- In case of a draw after 90 minutes, the game proceeds to two 15-minute extra time halves.
- If still tied, the match is decided by penalty shootouts.
Each group winner faces a runner-up from a paired group:
- 1st in Group A vs 2nd in Group B
- 2nd in Group A vs 1st in Group B
- And so on...
